Nakamura Tokichi is a historic tea house and cafe in Uji, the birthplace of Japanese green tea culture. Founded in 1859 as a tea merchant, the beautifully preserved Meiji-era building now serves as a cafe offering matcha and hojicha desserts made with the finest Uji tea. The signature matcha jelly, parfaits, and soba noodles attract visitors from across Japan who come to experience tea at its source.

Access
1-minute walk from JR Uji Station. The main store is immediately visible upon exiting the station. Also accessible from Keihan Uji Station (10-minute walk).
Tips for Visitors
Extremely popular—expect 30-90 minute waits on weekends and holidays. Write your name on the waitlist upon arrival. The take-out shop has shorter lines for matcha soft serve. Visit on weekday mornings for shorter waits. Open 10:00-17:30.
